Dynamic Wind Studio

Dynamic Wind Studio is a complete, native rigging and physics authoring toolkit inside the Unreal Engine editor. It transforms any static 3D model into an interactive, wind-animated Skeletal Mesh optimized for Epic Games' GPU Dynamic Wind system and custom CPU spring-damper physics solvers.

Designed from the ground up for game developers, technical artists, and environment creators working with trees, vegetation, grass clumps, hanging cloth banners, flags, two-pinned cables, and interactive props.

System Requirements & Prerequisites

  • Engine Compatibility: Unreal Engine 5.7 (or 5.x with Dynamic Wind experimental plugin).
  • Required Built-in Plugins:
    • Dynamic Wind (Epic Games experimental plugin)
    • ProceduralMeshComponent
    • GeometryScripting
    • Procedural Vegetation Editor (Optional, for Nanite assembly trees)
  • Rendering Requirements:
    • DirectX 12 / Shader Model 6 (SM6)
    • Nanite Foliage enabled:
      ini
      r.Nanite.Foliage=True

Quick Start (3-Minute Guide)

  1. Launch the Studio:
    • In your Content Browser, right-click any Static Mesh β†’ select Rig in Dynamic Wind Studio.
    • Or click the Wind Studio button on the main Level Editor toolbar.
  2. Parts & Pivot:
    • Hit T to align your pivot to the base of the mesh.
    • Click Split by Islands to automatically partition trunk and foliage.
  3. Bones & Skeleton:
    • Select your branch parts and click Auto Bones: All Parts.
    • For dense grass patches, tick Grass to enable clump optimization.
  4. Weight Painting:
    • Inspect skinning weights or hit R to paint custom Wind Pin masks.
  5. Wind Dynamics:
    • Select your asset preset (Tree, Bush, Flag, Cable) and test Simulate Wind in the viewport.
  6. Build & Export:
    • Click Build Dynamic Wind Skeletal Mesh. The asset is built and automatically linked to a Level Wind Manager.
